Frequently asked questions
Who needs to issue a paystub in Canada?
Most provinces require employers to provide employees with a written wage statement for each pay period. Ontario, BC, and Alberta all have this requirement under their Employment Standards Acts. Even where not legally required, paystubs protect both the employer and employee by documenting what was paid and deducted.
What deductions appear on a Canadian paystub?
Standard deductions include federal and provincial income tax, CPP (or QPP in Quebec) employee contributions, and EI premiums. Optional deductions include RPP/pension contributions, union dues, and group benefits premiums.
How is income tax withholding calculated?
Employers annualize the employee's pay (multiply the period pay by the number of periods in the year), calculate the annual tax owing, then divide by the number of pay periods. This tool follows the same method CRA documents in its Payroll Deductions Online Calculator guidance.
When do CPP and EI deductions stop?
CPP contributions stop once an employee has contributed the annual maximum — approximately $3,867 for 2026 (based on maximum pensionable earnings of $71,300). EI premiums stop once insurable earnings reach $65,700. This tool shows a warning when approaching these thresholds.
